What a SADC agreement can do for you

There are numerous trade agreements between countries all over the world. Some are for very specific countries, conditions and commodities but their primary purpose is to promote trade. South Africa has several trade agreements, one is being a part of the Southern African Development Community or SADC.

SADC was the predecessor of the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference or SADCC, which established in Lusaka, Zambia in the year 1980. It’s main objective being “to achieve development, peace and security, and economic growth, to alleviate poverty, enhance the standard and quality of life of the peoples of Southern Africa, and support the socially disadvantaged through regional integration, built on democratic principles and equitable and sustainable development.”

This organisation embarks on initiatives and campaigns to improve and develop their communities. Companies that trade in member states see a direct benefit with the reduction or exclusions of duties on commodities. Another benefit is certain countries omit the need for inspection documents if goods are issued a SADC certificate.

Current member states are Angola/ Botswana/ Comoros/ Democratic Republic of Congo/ Eswatini/ Lesotho/ Madagascar/ Malawi/ Mauritius/ Mozambique/ Namibia/ Seychelles/ South Africa/ United Republic of Tanzania/ Zambia/ Zimbabwe

A company can apply for a SADC certificate if they are registered as a SADC exporter with customs. Customs will issue a pack of registered certificates linked to your customs code, and the exporter will be required to state whether goods are partly or wholly manufactured in South Africa.
